Thanks very much !
I mean when X just works and you don't have a xorg.conf anywhere in your system.. where are those X settings stored for use ? then I'd take note and keep in case of need (eg. upgrade after upgrade the OS may use newer xorg that no longer support some legacy hardware .. when you lose X you find no working xorg.conf to bring it back.)
