Because production of the official CD set has to be planned & managed making sure that the sets are available on the release date, the OpenBSD project will tag in CVS the file versions used to build OpenBSD 5.0-
release months in advance.
CVS tagging for OpenBSD 5.0-
release took place mid-August:

Recent snapshots will have 2.5 months of check-ins past what constitutes 5.0-
release.

This depends upon your expectations, skill set, & willingness to monitor project communications. A number of people run
-current as desktops, & some even run it in production use. Yet by doing so, those running
-current take on the responsibility of dealing with change & software freshly developed. This may include the need to compile ports since
-current packages are not always synchronized with snapshots & library changes may require packages to be updated while in the middle of the development cycle.
-current users should also regularly read the project's mailing lists to monitor whether recent issues require further action.
More information on what is expected of
-current users can be found in
Section 5.1 of the FAQ.
