Default Recommendations for a U.S. Email Service provider
I have reached the breaking point with Earthlink and will be looking for a new provider. I presently pay Earthlink $4.15/month and find that that buys me 51 web cookies+several adds every time I log into web mail. The web cookies are slow to upload on bandwidth that I am paying for separately.

Ideally, I would like to have my own email server set up in a similar fashion to jggimi's but it is not in the cards right now.
