While http://openports.se/ can be convenient, it also is down a lot. It is also a third-party tool which has no affiliation with the Project proper. If its administrators decided to take it down tomorrow, there is nothing preventing them from doing so. Knowing how to use multiple tools provides more options since some tools are better for a particular task than another.

As you should soon learn, the Project's most important asset is its repository of all code for the system + package system infrastructure. Becoming proficient in using CVS will help answer many problems & questions.
