Verify that xorg works by starting twm instead of mate. If no mouse in twm, review xorg config settings
If mouse pointer is present in twm check xrandr in mate terminal to see if you have multiple displays. This can also be done in mate-control-center if it is functional in NetBSD. Also look at cursor themes
