If one's machine is capable of 80x50, it might work out reasonably well if
/etc/rc.local contained these commands:

wsfontload -h 8 -e ibm /usr/share/misc/pcvtfonts/vt220l.808
wsconscfg -dF 5
wsconscfg -t 80x50 5
Then
[CTRL]+[ALT]+[F6] after boot to get the 80x50 login screen.
