Default ddrescue: Must one use 512-byte blocks for HDDs?

I am currently recovering data off a bad drive using ddrescue.

If left at the default of 512-byte sectors, the best speed I can get is 200kb/s. If I set the block size to 64k, data comes off at up to 20Mb/s

For a first, get-off-quick pass, is it safe to push up the block size?

Changing the cluster size (number of blocks per read) does not improve things any.

(160GB @ 200kb/s = a long time - I might not live that long, let alone this dying drive!!!)
