The way I read the Nov 17th announcement is you need to do "protsnap extract" instead of "portsnap update" for a period of time.
FWIW, I checked file /usr/ports/security/py-fail2ban/distinfo and versions are:
fail2ban-fail2ban-0.8.6-0-g1efe1bc.tar.gz
which seems agrees with the WEB site in pkg-descr has. I last did a portsnap a week ago though.
