FreeBSD 4.x was faster on my older hardware, but that's all I can really say for it. Today I would find it very difficult to switch back to 4.x.
I haven't tried DragonflyBSD, but I think that would probably be the best option for someone with a real attachment to the FreeBSD 4.x series since it is a fork of 4.11. Running an unsupported operating system doesn't make any sense to me.
