Do also make buildworld and make installworld steps according to FreeBSD Handbook.

I generally do it that way:

# cd /usr/src
# make buildworld
# make kernel KODIR=/boot/testing
# nextboot -k testing
# reboot
---
# cd /usr/src
# mergemaster -p
# make installworld
# mergemaster -iU
# make delete-old (optional)
# make delete-old-libs (optional)
# cd /boot
# mv kernel old
# mv testing kernel
# reboot
