If I recall correctly, a whole bunch of domain names worked: bsdforums.org freebsdforums.org openbsdforums.org, etc. I believe "freebsdforums" was the original name, but later got changed to the more inclusive bsdforums.org

I called him on the phone, as did ocicat (at least once and possibly twice?) He promised to fix things ASAP, but that never happened...

IIRC the biggest problem was a change in the Terms of service which stated that all content you post is not the content of bsdforums.org, rather than your own. I don't remember the ads being brought up.
