I am working in a HPC datacenter for almost two years now. I can assure you the needs are :

- Heat
- Power consumption
More:
- Compute power
- Storage
You should definately boot diskless as hard drives always are the single point of failure in such an infrastructure (too costly to RAID all boxes)...
