I definitely have root, I spend far too much time in root if anything

When I run the newfs command you gave me I get this:

# newfs -L media -U /dev/da2
newfs: /dev/da2: failed to open disk for writing

I have triple checked that it is not already mounted somehow. Am I being daft by not being in single user mode perhaps?
