It's my guess that you started X previously while the superuser, and your $HOME/.Xauthority file is owned by root.
Check the file with ls(1). If it is owned by root, the easiest fix is to delete the file, and restart X. (You may also want to check on the inter-process communications file .ICEauthority also.)
