The zfs file system has the ability to mirror/snapshot your data on the fly. If you have a large amount of data, this can take significant RAM, CPU and hard drive R/W. ECC memory is a plus but not generally available on laptops. IMHO, the zfs file system is more appropriate for servers, not laptops.
FreeBSD has a
web page on supported NVidia, Intel and AMD/Radeon graphics.
Also be aware that Lenovo and HP have some hard ware restrictions in their bios that impacts the ability to swap out the wireless card - not sure if this impacts CD -> HD.
