tbh, with the huge size of KDE and Gnome, I think /usr/local/kde4 is a great idea -- especially if you want to use kde3 and kde4 on the same machine or take backups of kde.
Just like /usr/local/texlive/2007 when using the default from the TexLive DVD, it's just a smart idea.
