This was my fault, you never stated a desire to do WPA encryption..
I hope that clarifies things, it often confuses new users that OpenBSD has WPA implemented in way that's different from the other BSD's and Linux.

Interesting...man wpa_supplicant tells a different story :S. It primarily talks about wireless networks, and has a list of compatible drivers for wifi cards.

All of which is irrelevant in my case anyway because:
a) The man page is dated 28 May 2007
b) The wpi driver used by the 3945 card isn't listed (presumably it was created after May 2007)
