In fact, they are just another example of the 'Station wagon full of magtape" effect - there will always be a point where physically shipping a data medium will be more efficient - and for a 1/2(?)gram uSD card, a pigeon is a remarkably efficient shipping method, if you don't count feed and initial transport of the bird, that is.
