If you boot an OpenBSD RAMDISK kernel (bsd.rd), the dmesg is likely to show the device vendor and model. No installation will be needed. With that information, we can at least look to see if the device would be recognized and assigned to a driver included with a GENERIC kernel.

I assume NetBSD's ramdisk kernel could function in a similar fashion.
