The order of events should have been:

1. "Wow, I'm curious about this point brought up in this thread!"
2. "I'd like to ask for further clarification!"
3. "But before I post, let me go back and re-read the original message in the thread!"
4. "Wow, my question isn't related to what the original poster asked! If I posted to this thread, I'd be hijacking discussion!"
5. So I'm going to do the right thing by starting a new thread! And to help clarify what I want to ask, I'm going to include a link to this thread so others can understand what I'm talking about!"

This is the conversation you should have had in your own mind before posting anything.
