I assume you are thinking about creating VLAN's to simulate multiple switches. Before getting too far, you will need to verify that your Ethernet interfaces can support VLAN's. Not all network interfaces do. The first place to go is to study the manpage for the interfaces shown in your dmesg(8) or ifconfig(8) output.
