Building from ports will not help you -- there will be no difference in the packages produced by compiling ports from the packages you've already installed.

If your crashes are not due to your OS configuration (RAM size, swap space size), then your problem is most likely Firefox software.

Firefox crashes. A lot. It's very magnanimous about it; it crashes on every architecture it runs on.

If you want to keep using Firefox, you must get used to this. If you have some debugging skills, you could try to help Mozilla by turning on debugging options, analyzing failures, and submitting patches that fix the bugs ... and hope they take your submissions. For that, you'll want the port, to have access to Firefox source code.

As to your font problems, they might be video configuration related rather than caused by gtk software.
