amd64 != ultrasparc
I never claimed that i386 is better in any way than amd64 or any other 64 bit or higer technology. My point was that amd64 OS is more useful with more RAM, and having only 4GB is just very minimalistic ... and that of course should not(I hope so) have anything with your current problem.
Having 64bit OS implies that size of int are doubled, and that doubles usage of memory.
