The hardware compatibility listed on the project website is for the 4.8 release. 4.9 will be released on or about 1 May 2011.
You can test your NIC for 4.9 compatibility very simply. Download and boot a -current ramdisk kernel -- as -current at the moment is very similar to what 4.9 will be. Small .iso images for burning onto CD or DVD are available from your nearest mirror.
On booting the ramdisk kernel, leave the install script and examine the dmesg output. If the NIC does not appear in the list of discovered devices, or, it appears with "not configured" -- then the device cannot be used.
