This is FreeBSD. You have the choice: packages or ports. Freebsd-update or make world. But you must be ready to dig yourself out of a hole. X and everything around it should build just fine if your other ports, and the ports tree, are up to date. I rebuilt X and about 150 related ports about a month ago in a 32-bit -> 64-bit switchover. Took me the best part of a day, but everything works, as it has always done. If you managed to survive Gentoo, you should be able to survive FreeBSD. Because it
does have structure.
