It's the hard drive. I pulled the 35 GB Hitachi Ultrastar, popped in a 2 GB Seagate Barracuda, and OpenBSD 4.8's dmesg is fine. It must be something in the Hitachi drive that doesn't affect OpenBSD < 4.8. The rest of the SS20 is still fine with OpenBSD 4.8 (and presumably 4.9).
I'm going to install OpenBSD 4.7 and give myself (and eventually openbsd-misc) more time to figure this out.
