I would definitely not use alcohol laced with glycerine and wintergreen, and...I don't think you're supposed to use a hammer!

The service manuals for these machines are also online. Lenovo's term is Hardware Maintenance Manual.

A search for thinkpad x220t service manual turned up the manual for my laptop. Substitute your model for 'x220t'.

The hardware manual for the X220 explains the disassembly steps and gives specific instructions on the amount of thermal paste to use.
