Granted. But a driver has neither been ported nor developed. The device is listed in sys/dev/pci/pcidevs for hardware recognition, but as far as I can tell there is no PCI driver for it. Other RTL8188* devices, which are USB-attached, are driven by urtwn(4). Those require external firmware as you noted, installed through fw_update(1). This is automated during installation through rc.firsttime(8) but if the device is the only NIC, the automated firmware installation will not succeed.
