Today, I reverted to
lpd(8). Once again, CUPS had failures with terrible diagnostics. I've removed it and everything that depended upon it. (I still have the cups-filters and cups-libs installed, they are dependencies of other packages that require them.) Now, I'm just using my simple Postscript printer and a plain PPD file.
