The port can still be found in the ports tree, so it has not been officially dropped. The decision to no longer provide it as a package may be based on other
(unknown) reasons.
However, the check-in messages for the port's
Makefike:

...does support the notion that the port is quite dormant.

Obviously, this port is important to you. I would suggest posting to both
ports@ & the maintainer again. I assume you haven't contacted either recently, so what have you got to lose?
