I remember watching a documentary on the BBC some years ago and apparently in the early days of computing the big boys designing computers felt that programming was a lowly typist's job not worthy of their grand attention.
So, secretaries and such got `stuck' with this `mundane job', and the first generation of programmers was predominately female...

... This soon changed as we all know ...
UNIX was not designed to stop you from doing stupid things, because that would also stop you from doing clever things.
