You don't need X11 or sound card support, sound cards are 100% handeled by the OS (FreeBSD) and X11 has nothing to do with it.

As for audio player, there are many console audio players, a few from teh top of my head:
multimedia/mplayer
audio/mpg123
audio/mp3blaster
audio/ncmpc (Client for audio/musicpd)
