If I understand what happened -- I may be wrong -- this happened during initialization of the virtual memory subsystem during boot. If this happened with just the "original RAM" in the computer -- I can think of only two possibilities: either your "original" RAM is bad, or your "original" RAM is insufficient to boot. You need at least 24-32MB of it.
