I don't know what you've been using for input, but for Japanese, 6.3 brings fcitx-anthy. I've found that fcitx is much better for me than ibus ever was, especially in OpenBSD, though it was causing me troubles in other systems as well. One thing I found is that I did need to install fcitx-gtk3 for firefox and LibreOffice to work properly.
