Default net-im/sim-im* crashes blackbox

Has anyone actually gotten sim-im or sim-im-devel to work?

I thought I'd give it a try, so I installed sim-im-devel, on running sim, I was asked to create an account user name, then my screen went black and I was returned to the Gnome Display Manager (gdm). I checked vtty0, nada; Xorg log file, nada; messages, showed that blackbox had crashed each time that I launched sim.

Code:
Terry@dixie$ grep blackbox /var/log/messages 8:26
Sep 28 08:08:04 dixie kernel: pid 1397 (blackbox), uid 1988: exited on signal 11
Sep 28 08:10:50 dixie kernel: pid 2620 (blackbox), uid 1988: exited on signal 11
Sep 28 08:14:22 dixie kernel: pid 2872 (blackbox), uid 1988: exited on signal 11

I had tried sim-im-devel, then sim-im, and both resulted in blackbox crashing :\. I tested it under FVWM 2.5 without segfaulting my window manager, so I'm a sure it was a bug in blackbox. But SIM was not really in a "usable" state once it got started up.....
