I see you still use pulseadio. What I asked you to do is to hash in rc.conf:
dbus="YES"
hal="YES"
gdm="YES"
and restart the system and then try to play some file (use some console mp3 player).
I am pretty sure that there is something with the setup (perhaps gstreamer). Could you try to run gstreamer-properties and set everything to pulseadio after you try to play the sound from pure console?
I really cannot imagine that azalia doesn't support your hardware.
Hdaudio drive is available as far as I know in current only- you had to download the sets for current and build you own kernel only with hdaudio removing azalia.
Please hash dbus, hal and gdm, restart the system and then play a sound. BTW, do you use headphones set when playing?

how did you installed gnome? Maybe some component is missing?
