Please disregard this message. As most things, the solution comes to me once I finally ask for help. I wasted a day and a half trying to figure this out and finally found the cause.

I had tried three different ports on my 48 port switch and all 3 would link up fine but apparently not pass traffic. I was able to pass traffic between two laptops plugged into the same ports so I have no idea what was going on. Possibly an ARP timeout issue or something. Anyway, once I moved to three other ports on the switch I connected fine. This was a really strange problem. Oh well, live and learn.
