Certainly, hackware. I do it all the time in OpenBSD, where a USB-mounted drive behaves like a SCSI device -- it doesn't matter if it's a memory stick or a disk drive. Your BIOS must be able to boot from USB to be able to boot the drive. If not, one can boot from other media -- your network, a non-USB hard drive, CD, or even diskette.
