it is only when you play mp3 or don't you have sound at all? Do you use gnome? Can you play anything from console?
You can also try adjusting the mixerctl variables (i.e. mute some chanel etc). I think there is a problem.
On current you can use hdaudio driver for the chipsets of Intel (so instead of azalia driver).
