Which NFS version ? I suppose NFS3.
On the server: which OS, locale, NFS version.
On the client: which OS, locale, NFS version.
Two years ago, there was a "feature" on NFS3 which would mount a NFS share ro in case the file sytems used "different" code page/locale.
Most FTPs "translate", NFS does not.
