2 or 3 years ago I was running my websites and mail server on one OpenBSD machine and wanted to separate the services. My options were to use NetBSD Xen, FreeBSD Jails or bhyve, OpenIndiana or OmniOS.
Since I had used Solaris for over a decade (started with AIX about 10 years before that, and FreeBSD around the time of AIX so I could learn Unix at home) I wanted to use it, but OpenIndiana was stale and barely breathing and I didn't care for OmniOS. Next up was FreeBSD Jails, but I wanted a separate network stack and vimage has some issue; bhyve was relatively new at the time and it worked but not polished. NetBSD Xen Dom0 worked fine and I had a couple of NetBSD Xen DomU's running and thought that is what I'd be using.
Then I somehow happened to stumble upon SmartOS. I couldn't get OpenSMTPD to build on Solaris, but it has KVM and I was able to get OpenBSD to run so it solved my needs and I've been running it for over 2 years without any downtime.
NetBSD Xen Dom0 did work and I read somewhere there was talk of making Xen part of the NetBSD 7 installation process which would help immensely with adoption of it. I'm not sure if that is still in the future for NetBSD 7 or not.
