Have a look at the
splash(4) manpage.
You shouldn't have to restart the system to change the screensaver.
If you want to change the daemon screensaver to the snake screensaver, run:

# kldunload daemon_saver
# kldload snake_saver
Then you can edit
/etc/rc.conf after that so that snake_saver will load upon reboot.
