I totally agree about youtube-dl. It does exactly what it says and I use it every time I need something from Youtube.

As for viewing FLVs, I use mplayer with the GNOME frontend. It has a very minimal, non-skinned, interface, and even though it's a GTK application, it doesn't need half of GNOME as dependencies.
