The offical FreeBSD forums switched from Vbulletin (proprietary license) to phpBB (GPL). Because of many different issues, they switched again to the proprietary licensed Xenforo.
Having an open source license does not guarantee the software is good
BTW although some people would call it "closed", we have the PHP source code ....
