With respect to your X11 questions:
  • Depending upon how the following question was answered during installation (covered in Section 4.5.2 of the FAQ...), X may already be installed:
    Code:
Do you expect to run the X Window System? [yes] _
  • If X11 is installed, startx will start X with the default fvwm(1) window manager.
  • If X was not installed during installation, the X filesets can be installed after the fact. See Section 4.11 of the FAQ for details.
  • All filesets are listed in Section 4.5.4 of the FAQ. The filesets specific to X begin with 'x'. Assuming you have installed OpenBSD 5.1, these are:
    • xbase51.tgz
    • xetc51.tgz
    • xshare51.tgz
    • xfont51.tgz
    • xserv51.tgz
If you want to install Gnome,
  • Gnome is available in OpenBSD's package system. Familiarizing yourself with the information found in Section 15 is a must.
  • The gnome-session package fundamentally needs to be installed. Without the dmesg(8) information requested earlier, I will not be able to give you more precise version numbers.
Yes, it will take time to become oriented with OpenBSD's documentation, especially as a newcomer.
