Hi Barti !
Your adsl issue reminded me of my similar old woes with ueagle driver for Sagem Fast 800 (thanks Damien Bergamini !) .. then , a cheap router made my OpenBSD journey pleasurable !
I use xinit -instead of startx- to start a window manager & I always found it good to not autostart window managers nor use xdm. First login to console mode then decide.Sometimes you just love being CLI.I have the habit to use fvwm. The xinitrc is located in /etc/X11/xinit/ .. you can edit it to fit your needs .. if you want to use kde you simply do a :
xinit /usr/local/bin/startkde
for gnome :
xinit /usr/local/bin/gnome-session
(but I dropped it as the new 3 version is too heavy to use on my acer aspire )
for enlightenment :
xinit /usr/local/bin/e16
(I made aliases for these++ in my .profile )
You can now stick to 5.1 stable .. later on you may decide to taste current.. -stable is a peaceful lake/river whereas -current is an outrageous stormy ocean .. :-) .. keep going !
