Yes, I've tried VNC. I run into issues with differing screen resolutions that limits its usefulness (at least the versions I used).
What works best, actually, is simply to walk across the room to use a Windows box. With WinSCP and a remote shell, I can get by. I'd just rather have it on the same computer. The old VMware in ports is actually rather good, but its limitation to a single core is a PITA.
