There are two major points when it comes to installing/upgrading: - How to boot the (newer) bsd.rd kernel. Be this through copying locally, PXE. booting the cd51.iso or install51.iso images, or from a USB drive, until this newer kernel is booted, nothing else is important.
- Once the bsd.rd is booted, installation of the filesets can be done through any means supported by the installation kernel -- ftp(1), locally from a CD or USB drive, etc.
