.NET Core is usually used as framework for backend of webapps (backend is server-side) and competes with Java's frameworks like Spring.
Gnu/Linux and FreeBSD are operating systems of choice for servers, so it is understandable why they are bringing .NET Core for Gnu/Linux and let community do the work to bring it to FreeBSD.
