I'm new here and probably a tad bit late answering but I don't know if you got your problem solved or not. I ran into an issue on an SCO OpenServer box a couple of years ago where a directory somehow started showing up twice with the same name but the new one had four identical characters at the end that looked like upside down houses. I tried everything I could think of to delete it from the command line but nothing worked. I ended up ftping into it from a Windows box using FileZilla and deleted it that way. I'd never seen that problem before that and have never seen it since. That might work for you too.
